Most Everest-related records are achieved at its peak, but the latest record-breaking feat took place high above the Himalayan mountain. That’s where Belarusian athlete Olga Naumova recently smashed the record for highest skysurfing jump.
Naumova is a 15-year veteran of the sport, with over 17,000 skydives logged. Even with that formidable record, she has yearned to find new heights. “Since I discovered skysurfing, it was my dream to perform a very unique skydive and to inspire girls around the world not to be scared to be bold and to dream big,” she told Guinness World Records.
On November 10, she achieved exactly that. Naumova traveled to Syangboche, Nepal, where a helicopter took her 20,945 feet above Mount Everest. After strapping in to her board and freefalling for several minutes, she landed on a flat runway at 12,356 feet, with a brand-new Guinness world record (metaphorically) in hand.
“I’ve dreamed of this jump for years.” wrote Naumova on Instagram. “I trained for it, I feared it, I obsessed over it… Every practice jump, every moment of ‘Can I really do this?’ led right here – above the highest mountain in the world.”
