The Inertia

A pair of conjoined gray whales were found floating in Mexico’s Laguna Ojo de Liebre on Sunday.

Researchers are speculating that the twins were likely a miscarriage, as they are underdeveloped. While normal size for newborn gray whales is 12 to 16 feet, the ones found in Mexico are only seven feet. They were collected for further study.

According to Pete Thomas, a researcher from the Amercian Cetacean Society named Alisa Schulman-Janiger stated that the whales could not have survived on their own, as it would have required too much coordination for them to breathe. “If they weren’t born dead, they died soon after they were born,” she said.

The mother has not been found.
