A diver was recovered after being swept out to sea off the coast of Morocco last week. As The Sun reports, recovery was all the more remarkable for occurring two days after he went missing and 96 miles away.

Last Wednesday afternoon, the 23-year-old was diving with friends off of Fnideq, on Morocco’s north coast, when a powerful current swept him away and into open water. It was not specified if the man was scuba diving, snorkeling, or freediving. He was, according to reports, wearing a wetsuit.

The crew of a merchant ship bound for Portugal spotted the wayward diver two days later, 24 nautical miles off Caleta de Vélez on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

The sailors called authorities, who sent a rescue helicopter to retrieve him. After a tense retrieval operation, the diver was airlifted to Motril on Spain’s Costa Tropical, then taken straight to a hospital.

Though he was dehydrated and showing signs of hypothermia, the diver was remarkably stable, considering the ordeal. He is expected to return to Morocco upon discharge from the hospital.
