One of the four Australian shark attack victims from last week has died. According to an update from his parents, Nico Antic has tragically succumbed to the wounds he suffered while swimming in Sydney Harbor.
Nico was attacked on the afternoon of Sunday, January 18. The 12-year-old was swimming at Nielsen Park in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, when he was bitten in the legs by what authorities suspect to have been a bull shark. One of his friends managed to jump in the water and bring him back to shore, after which New South Wales water police officers administered first aid, then transported him to Sydney Children’s Hospital, where he was placed on life support. Days later, a relative confirmed to the Daily Mail that he was unresponsive and unlikely to recover.
“We are heartbroken that our son, Nico, has passed away,” wrote Nico’s parents, Lorena and Juan Antic, in the update posted on GoFundMe. “Nico was a happy, friendly, and a sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit. He was always full of life and that is how we will remember him.
“We would like to sincerely thank the first responders and the teams at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, for everything they did to care for Nico. We would also like to thank everyone in the community for their support and kind messages. We ask you to please respect our privacy during this exceptionally difficult time.”
