The first Olympic kitesurfing event took place last summer in Marseille. Held as one of the Paris games’ sailing events, the competition included 20 sailors, representing 20 countries. One of those competitors was Bruno Lobo of Brazil, who ended up placing seventh overall. Since then he’s been back on the grind, testing out new equipment and honing his technique. Recently, though, he had to take a quick detour from a training session to rescue a stranded swimmer off the coast of Brazil.
As Lobo explained in a recent Instagram post, he was testing out a new piece of equipment when the incident transpired. “After sailing a few meters I heard a cry for help and looked at the girl who was drowning,” he wrote in the caption (translated from Portuguese). “I promptly approached her with the kite, tried to calm her down and asked her to climb on my back. She was very tired and had no strength. I used the equipment to bring her to the sand safely, where the lifeguards performed the first service at the seaside and thank God everything went well.”
“Thank you for all the messages, I only did what needed to be done and what was within my power!”
