The Inertia

According to FOX 5 News, a teenager was attacked by a shark off Encinitas early Saturday morning. Details on his status have not yet been released.

At around 7 a.m. the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department received a call for assistance from lifeguards at Beacon’s Beach. The victim was diving for lobsters with friends at the time of the attack. “At first he thought it was the excited yell of a fellow lobster diver,” Chad Hammel, who diving with the teen and helped bring him back to the beach, told FOX 5.  “I realized that he was yelling, ‘I got bit! I got bit!’”

The group had been diving for about half an hour when the attack occurred. After they realized that it was a shark attack, they got the victim into a kayak, where they applied pressure to the wound. “His whole clavicle was ripped open,” Hammel continued. ” We told him he’s going to be okay, he’s going to be alright — we got help. I yelled at everyone to get out of the water: ‘There’s a shark in the water!’”

Once the group got him to the beach, he was flown via helicopter to the hospital. We’ll have more on this as the story develops.
