A snowboarder visiting a Maine ski resort has reportedly died after trying to retrieve an object dropped from a chair lift.
As WGME reports, the incident occurred on Saturday morning around 9 a.m. at the Sugarloaf Ski resort in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. According to Carrabassett Valley Police Chief Mark Lopez, Kendall Willard, 63, of Kingfield, dropped a glove while on the chair lift, then went to retrieve the item. However, in doing so, he entered a trail that had been closed due to icy conditions. Soon after, he lost his footing and slid approximately 800 feet into a patch of trees. The cause of death was blunt force trauma.
The area where Willard fell is known as Competition Hill. Lopez told local media that Willard was wearing snowboard boots and a helmet when he slid down the extremely icy slope.
There were apparently several witnesses that saw the snowboarder’s terrifying fall. The police chief said that ski patrol was able to reach the man, get him to an aid station but that CPR was unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead when the ambulance reached the mountain.
