Despite what he thinks, Ellen DeGeneris-lookalike Justin Bieber cannot ride a skateboard. Nor is he allowed to wear Thrasher magazine hoodies. At least according to infamous Thrasher editor Jake Phelps.
Phelps, who doesn’t pussyfoot, was referring to Bieber and Rihanna, who has also been seen publicy sporting Thrasher gear, when he recently said: “We don’t send boxes to Justin Bieber or Rihanna or those fucking clowns. The pavement is where the real shit is. Blood and scabs, does it get realer than that?”
See, the fashion world likes to latch onto things it knows nothing about and ruin them. Surfing has been a victim many times over. And its latest fascination is skateboarding. Which is why magazines like W and Vogue have penned gag-inducing features on the trend.
Here’s Vogue on the subject:
“The latest piece to make the street-to-chic crossover from the land of half-pipes and kick flips? The Thrasher tee. Officially paraphernalia from Thrasher magazine, the tee has become a rising staple in the model-off-duty wardrobe of any catwalker worth her Instagram following.”
In an interview with Dazed, Phelps called out Lil Wayne for being a poser and addressed the trend at length. “We laugh! Because it’s corny as shit! You can tell that people want to bite it because skateboarding is the hardest fucking thing known to mankind,” he says.
But surprisingly, he kind of likes it because it’s good for skateboarding and for his 35-year-old institution, saying, “Any saturation of skateboarding into the mainstream is good, in a way, because it’s good for us. But at the same time, it’s corny as fuck. What’s sad but true is that a lot of the clothing companies that suck are what’s propelling the industry right now.”
