I lived on Long Island for two years. Islanders are emphatic about that preposition. Long Beach quickly became my go-to place to get a surf in. What New York lacks in consistency, it makes up for in quality. Hurricanes, Nor’easters, and other smaller weather events can deliver hollow A-frames that pepper the barrier island’s uniform coastline. And when that happens, especially in the dead of winter, you tend to forget about the water and air temps. Elation warms you up just fine. And the beauty of staring down the barrel of a head high screamer perfectly peeling down the beach at golden hour is unforgettable.
