The Inertia

Surfing on the Gold Coast means dealing with crowds. Big crowds. The waves are fantastic, yeah, but with all those fantastic waves comes a whole lot of people trying to surf them. With an estimated 2.5 million surfers in Australia, it can sometimes feel like all 2.5 million are in the lineup with you. This, of course, leads to surfing’s cardinal sin: the drop in.

Above are ten instances of savage drop ins from a busy September on the Gold Coast, courtesy of Surflix Australia. There are a variety of reasons why someone might drop in (“you were too deep”, “the sun was in my eyes”, “you were never coming out”), but in the end, it’s a cardinal sin for a reason. Not only are drop ins dangerous, they are, quite frankly, a real dick move.
