There can be no doubt that Kai Lenny is one of the most talented and interesting men in surfing right now. From his big wave domination to his foil antics to his love for anything and everything on the water, Lenny holds the surfing world in the palm of his hand. Like Kelly Slater or Laird Hamilton, he’s one of those rare athletes who has managed to bridge the gap between surfing and the rest of the world. With all that in mind, he headed to the Instagram headquarters in New York recently to sit in a tiny little room and answer some questions from fans.
As it turns out, he’s got some lofty aspirations for life after surf. “Maybe I’d go into the Navy or something so I could eventually fly fighter jets,” he answers when asked what his plan is for after surfing, or what he’d do if he wasn’t a surfer. “Or maybe it would be getting into Formula 1. Those things have the most powerful cars and planes in the world.”
Aside from going as fast as he can, Kai’s also a big fan of the creative process. “I think I would probably pursue music or some sort of film stuff,” he says, “just because it captures the imagination. I always feel like a creator of some sort.”
Also included in his nine-minute sitdown: best places on earth to foil, his thoughts on Kelly Slater as a competitor and a person, a few little shark stories, and a whole lot more.
