It goes without saying that Al is one of surfing’s most eccentric characters. He’s seemingly always up to something new, fun, different, or weird (and, of course, looking mighty groovy while doing it). Those random tattoos, big snazzy sunnies, and his strange obsession with black socks and the Salvation Army is symbolic of a very peculiar and unmatched style that he carries in and out of the water.
Al’s surfing is perhaps what most separates him from his peers. From his ever-changing fin arrangements to owning pretty much every type of board you can think of, Al’s openness has produced some of the most unconventional, spontaneous lines in the business. But most importantly, Al’s general attitude has inspired thousands of creators and innovators, who seek to be different and challenge the status quo. And for that, we thank him.
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Alex Knost.
