Remember back in 2011 when Wavegarden released a few images of their test pool? It felt like the beginning of something. As it turns out, it was. Whether it was the beginning of the end has yet to be seen, but it probably wasn’t. It was simply the beginning of a new kind of surfing–one that takes place out of the ocean. And while it’s very easy to imagine that wave pools like WaveGarden and Kelly’s wave will only serve to crowd already overcrowded lineups, with any luck they’ll simply make a place for the excess.
Anyway, as is normal with anything tech, someone made something, someone else made something better, and then that first person was forced to reconsider their first thing. Of course, in between (and before, for that matter), other people made other wave-related things, but right now, the only two in the conversation are Kelly’s wave and the Wavegarden. Specifically, Wavegarden’s newest iteration, the Cove. Here, French pros Joan Duru and Maud Le Car found some time in between events to see what all the fuss was about.
