The Inertia

Mami Wata, an African surf brand co-founded by Selema Masekela, has announced something awesome: they’re releasing a book that is unlike anything else in surfing. Afrosurf documents and celebrates surfing and related street culture in Africa.

Like so many things these days, Afrosurf will be funded by a Kickstarter campaign that launches on August 21st. After printing and production costs, all proceeds will go towards Waves for Change and Surfers Not Street Children, two Africa-based surf therapy projects. It’s a beautiful book, too. Consisting of 300 pages of photography, stories, profiles, and interviews, Afrosurf tells Africa’s surfing story in a way that’s never been done before.

“Mami Wata is creating this book because Africa’s surf story needs to be told,” reads the press release. “Africa has a unique history of wave riding, its own diverse and original expressions of indigenous surf culture. The Motherland is also the final frontier of global surf exploration. Surfing, and protecting these natural, economic, and social resources (waves) will play an important role in the development of the continent.”

The book has 25 interviews, 200 gorgeous photos, wonderful stories, and more.

The book roams through the unique surfing experiences in places like Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, Mozambique, Sao Tome, South Africa, Liberia, Somalia, Nigeria, Cote DíIvoire, Cabo Verde, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, and more. “Afrosurf is a book that I believe will redefine and expand how the world looks at surf culture,” said Masekela.
