Highlights from Tahiti were spreading through the internet all last week. With the WSL’s Tahiti Pro running, the entire Championship Tour was in town for the affair enjoying some of the best pre-comp conditions we’ve seen this year. That swell stuck around long enough to get the contest started with the men’s field surfing its way down to the Round of 16 and the women knocking out all but the final.
Well, that same swell was still running strong by the time it reached Hawaii. On Thursday, August 7, all Hawaiian islands were given high-surf advisories for south facing shores. By Friday, summer hotspots like Ala Moana Bowls saw surf well overhead and forecasts predicted waves could reach 15 feet by Saturday.
The high surf advisories are still in effect until Monday evening.
Honolulu Ocean Safety said lifeguards issued more than 5,000 preventative actions and 69 rescues by Friday afternoon. The surf was good, to say the least. Enjoy this recap of the best Ala Moana Bowls of the year in 4k.
