Last year, while the CT held its event at Supertubos, we surfed the Cave with Brad Flora and the Portuguese lensman, Daniel Fernandes. It was a cold morning and the waves weren’t as good as we’d expected but Brad didn’t seem to care much. He just wanted to fly down a couple of bombs at the scariest spot in Portugal.

After an hour of surfing alone, Portuguese legend Nic Von Rupp showed up with Albee Layer and Torrey Meister, who didn’t think twice about joining Brad once they saw some of his waves. The show was great but it wasn’t a classic Cave session. The day after, the stars did align and we got the conditions we’d been expecting. The Pe’ahi Challenge had just been given the green light so Albee and Torrey were supposed to be on a flight straight to Hawaii. They decided to risk it all after seeing this Portuguese gem do its thing. There were sketchy wipeouts, lonely bombs, and some of the deepest barrels possibly ever seen at the Cave that day. Once again, Portugal showed why it’s one of the world’s best surf destinations.
