The Inertia

You likely recall the 1991 classic, Kelly Slater in Black and White – a film that even against today’s standards is widely regarded as one of the best surf flicks ever. The surfing, of course, was the prevailing reason. But, something about the color scheme (black and white) had something to do with it, too. It added an air of timelessness, gravitas even.

Not that a one-minute sizzle reel could hold a candle to an era-defining surf film – they’re not in the same category, really – but the reference is really to point out that black and white is a bold choice few filmers make that can only go one of two ways. For our bud Connor Guest’s surf reel above, it absolutely works. (See the serious look on Al Knost’s face after a little rebound at the 10-second mark).
