Surf Girls is getting a second season. The recently announced renewal of the Amazon Prime series, which follows up-and-coming female surfers as they travel the world competing in the Challenger Series, also brings with it an expansion in scope for the show, as Variety reports.
Season one of the series, titled Surf Girls Hawai’i and debuting in July 2023, focused specifically on the next generation of native Hawaiian female surfers. Over four episodes, it followed Moana Jones Wong, Ewe Wong, Maluhia Kinimaka, Pua DeSoto, and Brianna Cope, as they vied for a spot on the WSL Championship Tour. For season two, the show will broaden its scope to the international stage. This time, it’ll be following Ewe Wong, Sophia Medina, Kika Veselko, Jessie Van Niekerk and Sol Aguirre as they travel the world, representing their home countries.
“This season will feature the stories of both new and returning athletes who are forging a path for themselves in the world of female surfing,” reads the caption of a newly released teaser on YouTube. “Including native Hawaiian and breakout star of Season 1, Ewe Wong; a young competitor with a family history in surfing, who continues to break down barriers for female surfers in her home country of Brazil in Sophia Medina; the highly-motivated Portuguese sensation, who will stop at nothing to keep grinding and learning, Kika Veselko; Jessie Van Niekerk of South Africa, whose infectious energy keeps her going after she and her parents sacrificed everything to pursue her passion; and 2024 Olympian Sol Aguirre of Peru as she focuses on improving her mental approach to the sport she loves. In order to achieve their dreams of earning a coveted spot on the World Tour, they must develop as surfers, overcome their own personal struggles, and deal with the challenges of the international spotlight.”
The series is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine, in partnership with TOGETHXR, a digital platform focused on women in sports. Season two will premiere later this summer on Prime Video with all five episodes releasing at once. The air date has yet to be announced.
