Malibu and California’s summer months are an age-old pairing. The wave is one of the Golden State’s most iconic surf spots and with that comes the unavoidable surge of crowds when swell creeps through the Pacific. It’s a lawless place.
YouTuber Brad Jacobson has seen it all. Quite frankly when you’re standing behind a tripod for hours on end staring at schools of neoprene-clad piranhas clamoring for what they perceive as a scarce resource, most of the action you record is going to be complete and utter chaos.
I started to realize some time ago that the most ridiculous people at Malibu weren’t the ones acting as floating land mines on the inside of every set wave or even the guys who carelessly burn somebody (gasp), it’s the people who show up thinking they’re going to get waves to themselves and then resent the rest of the world when it doesn’t happen. That’s why this “when surfers collide” idea is a great one.
There are a couple of things to take from the video below. One, we all look pretty ridiculous from the perspective of the guy filming from the beach/pier/cliff. And two, a reminder that the chaos of your average day at any wave this busy is unavoidable. Maybe we should cut one another some slack from time to time.
