The Inertia

Koa Smith is a man of many contradictions. On the one hand, he’s a mindfulness fanatic. Meditations, affirmations and spirituality constantly weave through the videos he makes documenting his life. On the other hand, he absolutely charges, making a living for himself by screaming down the faces of cavernous surf in some of the world’s most treacherous breaks. In those moments, the zen spirit can feel like an afterthought, but it’s still there.

Smith’s latest video, Ascension, highlights both of those sides. It’s also a highlight reel and recap for what he calls “one of the greatest North Shore winters in years.” With that season coming to a close, it’s a perfect opportunity to revisit it for one last time, from freesurfs at firing Pipe to The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.

Don’t let the good vibes fool you, this is some absolutely mental stuff. Check out the full video below.
