The Inertia

If you’re an active person, there’s a very good chance that at some point, you’ll get hurt. Blown out knees, fin cuts, busted bones — they’re all par for the course if you’re sending it. And one does not get to the level that Austin Keen has reached by not sending it. As such, he’s had his fair share of injuries. His most recent one landed him in the hospital with a slab of meat hanging off the back of his foot, which is a decidedly bad thing when you’re a professional skimboarder. Above, Keen breaks down exactly what happened before, during, and after he opened up his heel.

“It was one of those cuts that you see on yourself and it’s almost shocking, you know?” he says. “I had to crawl up the beach because I didn’t want to stretch out my heel and open it up more.”

Fortunately, though, everything ended up just fine. Five stitches later and a visit to a specialist proved that it’s not something that will have lasting consequences. And knowing Keen, this won’t be his last visit to the emergency room.
