As a surfer, seeing wildlife is pretty common. Dolphins, seals and pelicans are all frequent encounters in the lineup. What you don’t expect to see, however, is a wallaby. However, that’s exactly what happened to a pair of Australian surfers, who rescued a marsupial that had somehow become lost at sea and caught the whole thing on video.

An edit of the encounter was shared on Instagram by The Paddlwans, an account run by a pair of South Australian surfers. In it, the pair are shocked to come across the struggling wallaby far out to sea. One surfer takes the creature and sets it on the nose of his longboard.

“This might be the first-ever surfing kangaroo,” said the videographer through his GoPro mouth mount, as he ferried the critter to shore.

Once on the beach, the pair took the wallaby to dry land, where it was alive, but still struggling to recover from the ordeal. By the time they left, it was standing upright, though perhaps still in a bit of shock.

“This is a message to all wallabies,” said the surfer before waving goodbye to the animal. “Wallabies don’t paddle.”
