The Inertia

The Middle East is rapidly becoming a hot spot for wave pool development. Kelly Slater Wave Co. chose Abu Dhabi as the location for its followup to the Surf Ranch, which was then soon followed by the site’s inclusion in the Championship Tour schedule. Though the development was not without controversy, it cemented the region’s new and unexpected place in the surf industry. Last October, artificial wave maker Wavegarden announced it was involved in another Middle Eastern project, this time in Bahrain. Now, a new press release from the pool’s developers signals that the wave is one step closer to fruition.

The facility, dubbed “Bahrain Surf Park – Club Hawaii Experience,” will be part of Bilaj Al Jazayer, a 1.3-million square meter development on the southwest coast of Bahrain. In addition to the Wavegarden-powered pool, it promises hotels, residential housing, restaurants, bars, retail, event spaces, and a skatepark. The newly inked press release announced that a construction deal for the park had been awarded to the Poullaides Construction Company, a contractor whose other projects include an indoor skydiving facility.

“This is a monumental milestone for Bahrain Surf Park – Club Hawaii Experience,” said the park’s general manager, Victoria Williams. “We are thrilled to be moving forward with this pioneering project that will bring a world-class surfing destination to Bahrain. This park is a key addition to the Kingdom’s leisure landscape, creating new opportunities for tourism, recreation, and economic growth.”
