The Inertia

Barron Mamiya’s not complaining about sitting within striking distance of a career on the WCT. Nobody would sympathize with him over that. In fact, he’s not asking for sympathy at all. He is, however, sharing some very real and very relatable thoughts for anybody going after a massive accomplishment.

Last year was the 19-year-old Hawaiian’s second full year of competition on the QS and he finished a very respectable 36th in the rankings. He also got a quick taste of the CT when he replaced Kelly Slater at last year’s Corona Bali Protected. His overall ranking saw a significant jump from 2017, his first year of grinding on the QS. These are all positive signs for a young athlete born just barely on this side of the 21st century.

In his new short, MIND, Mamiya admits he’s not immune to the same things that slow many of us down in any walk of life: fear, stress, and doubt.

“I lose sleep over it,” he says. “I just put too much pressure on myself and I started being like ‘Oh my God, should I even be doing this?'”

Watch Barron Mamiya surf and hear his thoughts on overcoming that all-too-relateable plague of self-doubt. We promise there will be no question in your mind that the guy’s plenty deserving of a shot at the World Tour.
