The Inertia

Barron Mamiya is heading into the World Surf League’s Portugal event with a yellow jersey on his back. It’s probably not a position he expected himself to be in, but a pair of entries as an injury replacement into Pipeline and Sunset set him on a trajectory that’s looking very good. A ninth-place finish at Pipe (where he very nearly beat Kelly Slater) and an amazing win at Sunset puts him at the top of the leaderboard. But when all is said and done, there’s a bit of an advantage to surfing your home breaks. And one of Mamiya’s is Rocky Point. He knows the wave well, and one only needs to watch the video above, shot shortly after he won at the Hurley Pro Sunset, to be convinced.
