Ben Gravy’s Caribbean journey has taken him to what he is calling “The Chopes of the Caribbean Sea.” A while back we saw him ride the “scariest wave he’s ever surfed,” at a spot that eagle-eyed commenters called out as being located in the Bahamas. Now he’s back to see if a swell pans out at a mystery wave he’s been eyeballing for some time now.
Gravy has explored the spot in the past, with results that were promising, but inconclusive. “A little bit of back story on this wave: I came here a few years ago, when it was much smaller, but I saw so much potential, here, that I’ve always wanted to see it huge,” Gravy explained at the top of the video. “I almost got the mini-Chopes tube of my life, but ended up nose-diving on a literal one-inch deep reef section.”
This time, Gravy finally got his chance. However, a rough morning prompted him to take a detour to another A-frame on the island. “Alright, we’re not exactly sure what to make of this whole thing, but there’s some type of wave, so I’m gonna try it,” said Gravy, before paddling out into the azure Caribbean water.
When he returned to the original wave, it turned out the Chopes comparison may have been a bit of an overstatement. On the other hand, once he actually paddled out at the treacherous spot, it turned out to be a surprisingly rippable peak. Not bad for a wave that seemed to have never been surfed before by the locals.
“All in all, kind of a high-performance wave in a weird way. You can actually get a couple turns off,” summed up Gravy. “Most affordable wave pool I’ve ever been to, by far.”
