The Inertia

In all the guy’s adventures around the world, you wouldn’t exactly expect Ben Gravy to grab a tow rope and swing into a chunky one at Nazaré. Scratch that, the tow rope part isn’t all that out of character. You’d just assume it’s attached to a wench so he can fire through pier pilings on a knee-high day (or at a wave pool). The king of novelty waves is rarely spotted surfing anything else, and Nazaré certainly doesn’t fit in that category.

Alas, Ben Gravy did, in fact, get behind a Jet Ski and tow into one of the heaviest and most popular waves on the planet. On a soft top. During his honeymoon.

Fueled up on coffee and chocolate croissants, the newlywed Gravy clan showed up next to the world-famous lighthouse overlooking the point with no solid plans. Surfing was a possibility but it wasn’t until Gravy got word the session was on that nerves clearly settled in.

“This is the gnarliest day of my life,” he says, clearly losing his mind and out of breath.

Ben takes his first wave on a proper tow board and instantly switches things up to go back to old faithful: one of his trusty foamies. It’s not the kind of massive XL tow sessions that normally fill social media feeds and highlight reels (“One of the smallest days of the year.”) but you can tell even on a smaller, overhead day, Nazaré has some oomph.
