The Inertia

In Aaron Lieber’s recent Bethany Hamilton biopic, Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable, the surfer from Kauai sets an intention early on. She wants to surf Jaws.

If the viewer thinks that sounds a little crazy, those closest to her say as much on camera. “Yeah, I don’t think she needs to do that,” says Bethany’s mother.

But, would Bethany Hamilton be Bethany Hamilton if her ambitions didn’t reach the stratosphere? If she didn’t look at something wild and crazy and think it possible? Unlikely.

Spoiler alert: Hamilton does successfully surf Jaws along with a few other crazy firsts for her in the film including surfing Pipeline and Teahupo’o pregnant, learning air reverses from Shane Beschen, and the most monumental first of all, becoming a mother.

We’ve written a few things on Unstoppable as an incredibly intimate portrait of a determined woman aiming to defy what the world believes she’s capable of. But, for as much praise as you can heap on a film, it’s quite another thing actually seeing it for yourself.

Today, Unstoppable is now available on iTunes and other video-on-demand platforms and if you haven’t seen it yet, we highly recommend that you do.
