The Inertia

It was almost four years ago we published a bootlegged video of what at the time was Bethany Hamilton’s first completed air reverse. At the time, filmmaker Aaron Lieber was knee deep in filming for an unnamed film project starring Bethany. We were handed the results of countless trials and errors, though, with zero backstory. We had no idea how many times Bethany had tried to take to the air, or why she wanted to do something new when she was already a dominant competitor against all odds.

Fast forward to April of this year, where Lieber’s documentary on Bethany’s life, Unstoppable, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and will soon be released to the general public. The film follows Bethany from childhood to motherhood, presumably through the horrifying shark incident that left her with one arm, to today where she continues to push boundaries. “From chasing her toddler, to chasing the biggest waves, Bethany is continuously rewriting the rules on being a fearless athlete,” reads the film’s description.

And here’s a second teaser for the film about Bethany wanting to surf Jaws. Spoiler alert, we don’t see her catch a wave in the video, but watch it for Kelly Slater’s reaction (:32) to Bethany wanting to surf there.
