Big wave surfers waxed up their guns and jetted off to Puerto Escondido for a run of swell. Photo: Edwin Morales//screenshot

The Inertia

When local Puerto Escondido photographer Edwin Morales says Zicatela had “perfect peaks” and “heavy tubes,” you know he means it. He called Monday, June 1 “one of those mornings where everyone seemed to be in the right place.”

In anticipation of the swell, big wave surfers flooded into the town, making the sand of Zicatela like a red carpet event. Nathan and Ivan Florence, Greg Long, and Tom Lowe — along with local chargers Marcial Monreal and Quetzal Estrada — all traded off waves at the Mexican Pipeline. (Are the Florence brothers going to surf every Puerto swell this summer?)

Anyone who has surfed Zicatela knows that “perfect” is a relative assessment of the wave. As the video shows, you have to pick the good ones and position yourself impeccably among a barrage of closeouts. But the tube of your life can be waiting for you out there.

According to Morales, Monday was “epic,” but just the warmup for the peak of the swell on Tuesday. Footage from yesterday of a crazy Tom Lowe left has already been going viral on social media.
