The Inertia

Dylan Graves may be the king of weird waves, but Blair Conklin is coming for him. In a recent video on Conklin’s YouTube channel, the pair teamed up to take on a strange novelty wave in Hokkaido, Japan. Even more surprising, though, was that it was Conklin who found the thing.

As they suited up in a nearby parking lot, Conklin laid out his vision for their strike mission to a little jetty that reflected water into a seemingly barely surfable ripple. “This is a wave I have never surfed and I saw a video of it a little bit ago and it got me fired up,” he explained. “It’s not a good wave by any means, but it’s a freaking cool-looking one.”

Soon after, Graves applied his expert eye. “The waves kind of like breaking along [the wall] but in a really unique way,” he said. “We were hoping for it breaking out there and us being able to ride along the wall, ideally. Blair was kind of like the instigator on this one. We’re just here for moral support.”

Somehow, the pair did manage to snag a few rides – just barely. On the other hand, it’s quite possible they are some of the first humans to even attempt to surf whatever the hell that thing was, so points for originality.
