Bodysurfer Mark Drewelow has set out to land himself in the Guinness Book of World Records by catching 60 waves in one hour. It’s quite the endeavor. Teaming up with San Diego photographer Steve Cummings, the two are building a team of photographers and creating a color-coded system of flags to document the big attempt. But their preparation for it all has raised some of the exact questions they’d anticipated; what exactly constitutes catching a wave?
“There’s no Bodysurfing Bible that states whether you caught a wave or not,” Cummings writes. “Very fun discussion topic, we’re finding out. To Mark and I, it’s pretty simple – once the wave is carrying you under its own power, the wave has been caught. Time to exit and repeat.”
By that metric, Drewelow’s most recent practice session is reason to believe he could exceed the 60 wave mark. Here he is pulling into 17 waves in a quick 15-minute run. Catch. Exit. Repeat.
