The Inertia

Music can go a long way to change how you look at a video. Take this example, from Chapter 11 TV‘s YouTube Channel. A spooky ambient soundtrack by Dirty Beaches transforms gray, spraying barrels into baleful spirits, chasing riders through the mist. The dissonant horns and clicking percussion gives a standard (but good) surf edit a weird sense of foreboding.

On the other hand, if you mute that same edit and put, say, “Demons” by Kim Petras under it, it’s completely different. Instead of wandering ghosts, we’re confronted with malevolent hell-hounds. An electronic song makes those same spitting tubes change from ethereal mist to an eldritch dragon’s breath. In the end, the ocean is just a vast, impassive body of water, and any personality we put on it is our own.
