The Inertia

The latest video from Clay Marzo opens with him in a position viscerally familiar to every surfer – scanning the surf from his car. However, Clay Marzo is anything but the average surfer, so his reaction is a little bit different.

“Wow, these guys suck,” he says, with a tone of genuine exasperation. “God, we’re blowing it, dude… Kook city, brah.”

From the mouth of most other surfers, the statement would be a little dismissive – from Clay, though, it’s just a fact. He’s a singular talent, both in terms raw skill and creativity on a wave. No matter what was actually going on in the surf below that parking lot, it was nothing compared to what he was about to do.

For the next four minutes or so, Clay puts his money where his mouth is. Barrels, rodeo flips, laybacks – you name it. It’s the sort of highlight-reel worthy performance we’ve come to expect from him, once again made all the more impressive for the fact that he manages to pull it all off seemingly effortlessly.

However, Marzo’s commentary in the video description was characteristically humble. “Hey fans, thanks for being patient on my next edit!” he wrote. “Here are some clips from a couple different sessions at my home break! I hope you enjoy!”
