The Inertia

Waves are about the only thing that can make me jump out of bed before the sun comes up. And I’d love to be one of those guys that wakes up and checks the surf as part of my daily routine but technology, mobile apps, and surf forecasting have combined to make me one shitty morning person. So there’s really no throwing on a flannel and a beanie, firing up the coffee pot and making the AM rounds to decide if and where I should surf. I share all this because I assume I’m product of what a lot of other surfers experience, thanks to the ability to check the surf on tiny little screens from the comfort of our beds.

I’m not sure if Clay Marzo has these same first world problems, but he clearly makes the most of the mornings he does spring out of bed with a little pep. At least that was the case here, where on three consecutive mornings Clay got on it early and put in a full day’s work before the yuppies of the world could get to brunch. Maybe what made him so spry in the morning was knowing he’d be treated to a barrel or five. Maybe “morning sessions” are few and far between for Clay unless it’s pumping and he spent the next week surfed out, recovering in bed past noon. Who knows? It doesn’t really matter though, because at least for these three days he gave some solid inspiration for starting each 24 hours in the ocean.
