From the start of the Quiksilver Pro, no other surfer seemed to be in form quite like Brazilian Filipe Toldeo. Although he fell short in Round 1, Toledo fought his way heat-by-heat, defeating top dogs like Kolohe Andino, Jordy Smith, Adriano de Souza, and hometown hero Julian Wilson in the Final to earn his first-ever WCT victory.
Despite an extremely slow start to the first half of the contest (in terms of waves), conditions remained stellar throughout the entire day, offering up rippable surf that allowed for an explosive heat after heat. With impeccable rail game and insane maneuvers like his grab rail reverse in his Round 4 heat against Wilko and Jordy, Toledo had his eyes on the prize the entire event. In the Final heat with Julian Wilson, Filipe Toledo posted a perfect 10 and a 9.67, putting on one of the most incredible performances professional surfing has ever seen. But, according to the man himself, his endeavors are not stopping there.
In his post-heat interview with Chelsea Cannell following his Quarter Finals victory over Bede, the elated Brazilian explained that he’s got the World Title on his radar. And with the performance like one we just witnessed down at Snapper Rocks, a World Title is not at all out of the question.
As equally impressive as Filipe’s achievement was Carissa Moore’s victory over 6-time World Champ, Stephanie Gilmore. In the Final, Carissa Moore utilized her hard carving turns to put the defending World Champion in a combo situation – something that isn’t exactly easy to do.
Congratulations, Filipe Toledo and Carissa Moore, your 2015 Quiksilver/Roxy Pro Champions!!!
