The Inertia

The Triple Crown was a little different this year. By a little different, of course, we mean a lot different, and now that it’s done and dusted, there aren’t too many who don’t think it was a good change. COVID put a damper on a lot of things — pretty much everything, really — and the World Surf League wasn’t immune, so instead of canceling the event altogether, they simply decided to shift it to a digital format.

Competitors had a month to film at Sunset, Haleiwa, and Pipeline, and submit their best clips. It created an event without bullshit tactics; an event without lulls and different conditions on different days. In short, surfing was the focus again. The simple act of riding a wave. And oh boy, did we see some fireworks. After John John Florence and Carissa Moore were crowned champions, Dane Gudauskas and Koa Smith sat down together at the Sunrise Shack to talk format, winning waves, and their personal experiences competing in the Digital Triple Crown Of Surfing.
