There’s many a species of animal that seems to enjoy surfing. Dolphins. Seals. Even pelicans are known to fly toward an oncoming set and skim along a wave before kicking out just before the end section. Ducks, though? They’re not exactly famous for surfing.
Back in June, though, during the Rapid Surf League’s IGSM Junior Jam in Munich, a group of ducks decided to interrupt the contest and give the whole standing wave thing a go. Eleven-year-old surfer Kona Ettel watched.
“The ducks looked like they were enjoying themselves but one of them couldn’t get free from the current, so Kona rescued the poor duck and let it go,” said Paul Guenther, who captured the action.
No word on whether the ducks plan to formally enter next year’s event.
