The Inertia

In addition to a laundry list of hard-hitting issues like immigration, healthcare, and curbing gun violence, the California State Legislature is currently mulling over whether surfing should become the state sport. It’s curious how anyone could get the impression our nation’s political institutions get anything done.

Several months ago, I wrote an opinion piece explaining why I think the effort is a terrible idea and undermines Hawaii’s historical claims. I agree with L.A. Times columnist Dennis Romero that skateboarding is a more logical choice.

Still, AB1782 passed in the State Assembly, 62 to 4, back in May and is likely to pass in the Senate very soon.

The Mercury News recently interviewed a handful of California residents (and a few non-residents) – the majority of which agree that if California is to have a state sport at all, it should be surfing.

But, in an effort to grow the sample size a bit here, I humbly submit to you, dear reader, the following question: Do you think surfing should become California’s state sport?

Your input, here, is much appreciated.
