Surfers have a romantic relationship with the night. Why? Because apart from dances in the moonlight, there’s no natural way to practice surfing without being able to see, and even during a full moon vision is questionable. As a result, images of surfing at night are few and far between. And even then those are oddities (see: Bruce Irons surfing with flares, or Red Bull Night Riders). But personally, I love to see them, because they’re unique. And awesome!
Maybe surfing’s obsession with the darkness was not entirely on the WSL’s radar. Or maybe it’s the poor forecast outlook for Tahiti that’s taking precedence. Either way, apparently there was a night surfing contest going on in Anglet, France called Surf de Nuit where surfers ride glowing boards. And unfortunately by the time of writing this, the event had already concluded and the live stream removed from the WSL site.
But damn, the bit that I managed to rewind to see looked pretty awesome. Let’s hope for some video highlights or photos at the very least to come out of the event shortly. Because right now, nada.
