Nobody knows weird waves better than Dylan Graves. And the novelty wave pioneer has a special connection to Puerto Rico, having grown up there. So when he says Crash Boat Beach is one of the most unique waves on the island, you know he’s on to something.
Located in Aguadilla on Puerto Rico’s west coast, the beach’s evocative name stems from its dock that was originally built for United States military rescue boats, which would rescue crews from the Strategic Air Command’s bombers that missed the runway at nearby Ramey Air Force Base. Since then, it has been filled in with sand and painted in playful colors – a far cry from its militaristic origin.
In his latest video, Graves surfed Crash Boat’s equally playful wave – along with a host of serious novelty wave talent. He was joined by his brother Josie Graves, nephew Ezra Graves, as well as special guests Mason Ho and Robbie Rickard.
“There is such a vibe at this wave,” summed up Graves. “From the music you hear from the people partying on the beach, to all of this wave’s unique little quirks. I absolutely love random spots like this. Waves that aren’t really meant to be waves. That turn on from time to time and challenge the way you traditionally surf. Because I think we can all use a bit of that perspective shift more often than we think.”
