Tom Curren, with all his eccentricities, was nearly the perfect surfer. He was able to dominate the mainstream contest scene while also appealing to the core with his beautiful style and seeming distaste for the corporatization of the sport. He had fans in every corner of the surfing world. Californians claimed him as their own while the French also rooted for him passionately, as he long made a home there and loved the barreling beachbreaks in France. “Maybe there is no such thing as perfect surfing, but Tom Curren is the closest we’ll ever get,” wrote the Encyclopedia of Surfing on its YouTube page after posting the video above.
