Finishing last season in sixth place, Ethan Ewing barely missed out on the Final 5 cut to compete in the season finale in Fiji. As a result, the 27-year-old Australian has only competed in one Championship Tour event at there, where he finished third in 2024.
But in theory, Cloudbreak and a well-balanced rail-and-tube surfer like Ewing are a natural fit. Ewing paid a visit to Namotu Island during the 2025-2026 offseason and showed why he’s a surfer to keep an eye on as the Championship Tour heads to the Fijian barrier reef next week. He has no problem timing his backhand tube riding with the pace of Cloudbreak, and is more than capable of belting a few snaps between barrel sections.
Ewing hasn’t exactly been one of the standouts on tour this season, but he’s been quietly building momentum. After winning on the Gold Coast, he had two stinker results in waves that play to his strengths: the long walls of Raglan and Punta Roca. Since then, he notched a third in Brazil and a fifth in Tahiti, keeping himself within striking distance of the title.
Ewing currently sits sixth in the rankings, a little over 10,000 points off the lead. A win in Fiji would put him right in the thick of the title race with five events remaining. With more than half of the season completed, now is the time for Ewing to make his move.
