On Sunday, January 26th, John John Florence will begin the defense of his three-peat Volcom Pipe Pro event title reign at the renowned Banzai Pipeline. An ASP WQS 5 Star Event, the 5th annual Volcom Pipe Pro has a $130,000 prize purse and will be hotly contested by the biggest Pipe specialists on the planet.
Both Pipe and Backdoor have experienced several epic days thus far this winter, and with a waiting period that extends until February 7th, this event is poised to receive epic conditions leading to potential career and reputation defining moments.
The 2014 Volcom Pipe Pro will host a field of 112 surfers, all of whom are competing at what is widely considered to be one of the most dangerous waves on the planet. Surfers will also be battling fiercely for valuable ASP ratings points to kick start their 2014 campaigns.
The eight highest placing Hawaiian surfers in the 2014 Volcom Pipe Pro, who are not already on the ASP World Championship Tour, will earn wildcard spots into the prestigious Billabong Pipe Masters event. So look for all of the local Hawaiian chargers to be highly motivated in hopes of setting themselves up for a run at the revered Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title.
