Have you, by chance, had the pleasure of visiting that little yellow shack on the Kam Highway? If you’re coming from Haleiwa, it’s just before Sunset. If you’re coming from Turtle Bay, just after. The Sunrise Shack sits there, unassuming with its chickens and smoothies and coffee and papayas, feeding hordes of surfers, all tanned and fit and salty and health-conscious.
Founded by Koa Rothman and Alex, Koa, and Travis Smith, it is a place to come and fill your surf-starved stomach with all sorts of cold, colorful sludges and pastes covered in chia seeds, bee pollen, acai and goji berries, spirulina, cordyceps, and shaved hoof of musk ox.*
The food is amazing — papayas filled with bananas, bananas dipped in papayas, organic coffee with MCT oil, superfood creamers, and infused with breath-of-Laird**.
But enough about the Sunrise Shack. Can we talk, just for a second, about how good a day is for the Smith clan? Firing waves on the 7 Mile Miracle. A morning rainbow, pumping Rocky Rights, a sweet-as little electric bike, a bowl of delicious blue sludge, followed by firing Pipeline? Stop it, you guys. Just stop it. Nah, keep doing it. All that happiness and healthiness is contagious.
* that’s not on the menu.
** that isn’t, either.
