The Inertia

If you’ve ever surfed with a top-level pro, then you know how much more impressive their surfing is in real life. On video, there isn’t much context. It’s generally a top-level pro compared to another top-level pro, but in real life, there are a bunch of average Joes paddling around, flapping their arms and poo-stancing their way through waves. When compared to the best of best it does one of two things: makes you realized how much better you could be at surfing or makes you realize just how good at surfing the best in the world are. It’s probably the latter. Enter Gabriel Medina at Dixon Park Beach, just down the way from Merewether.

Medina, of course, is in Australia for the WSL leg that includes Rottnest now — an interesting addition — and as such, he’s in the water among the plebs, surfing circles around just about everyone. It’s relatively rare to see Gabriel Medina surfing in an edit that doesn’t involve a jersey, but he’s got to practice somewhere, right?
