It goes with saying that there’s so much more to traveling than just surfing. Sometimes it’s equally rewarding to immerse yourself in an unfamiliar environment and make it a point to get acquainted with local culture—the food, friendships, landscape… these are the memories that brighten even the most dreary moments in life.
But sometimes, just sometimes, the stars align and you’re pleasantly surprised by both of travel’s greatest rewards: a rich cultural experience and wonderful surf. And if you’re really, really lucky you’ll get to enjoy some waves with no one out but you and your mates. Such was the case a few weeks ago when Garrett Parkes and Harry Bryant jumped the Tasman Sea from Australia to explore the remote southern coast of New Zealand, where they scored equal parts full rotations and big, dredging tubes.
