The Inertia

The first time Gerry Lopez surfed Uluwatu was in 1974. He wasn’t the first, but Bali was different then. Now, it’s not uncommon to see 100 surfers out in the lineup on an average day.

Things have changed, no doubt. And Bali’s sustained growth over the years has had an environmental impact. Project Clean Uluwatu explains that over the course of increased development, few restaurants had their own septic tanks, toilets were limited, and oil and organic waste was often tossed directly into the ocean.

Forty-one years after his first experience in Uluwatu, Gerry returns to talk about the lessons that both surfing and yoga can teach us about life and about ourselves, and why places like Uluwatu are worth protecting.
