The Inertia

Glacier calving is a fascinating phenomenon. Scientists use a variety of highly advanced methods and applications just to see it, and it provides valuable information in better understanding, for example, climate change. But the unpredictability of the whole spectacle is perhaps the most fascinating part. What begins as a small fracture can quickly give way to the entire glacier breaking off into the ocean, creating massive waves that resemble tsunamis.

The beginning of this clip makes you think the spectators created a safe distance from the glacier and their boat. However, these tourists never anticipated that an entire mountain of ice was going fall into the ocean. Luckily these guys were okay, but it just goes to show that you can never underestimate Mother Nature, as she can be a cruel and unpredictable bitch at times.

Question is: When will people start surfing these waves?

Bonus video. This rare footage has gone on record as the largest glacier calving event ever captured on film.
