Despite being world-renowned for its surfing culture, a lot of Southern California can often be surprisingly starved of waves in certain seasons. However, when it’s on, it’s ON.
Which is exactly what happened last week when Hurricane Genevieve barreled through the West Coast. Originating off the western coast of Africa, Genevieve built steam until it was a category five monster, before whipping all that energy into Baja California and Southern California beaches. In response, swell magnets like The Wedge went mental – and the footage has been rolling in to prove it.
The latest output from Genevieve comes courtesy of the surfing YouTube channel SLAWTV, where lensman John Cocozza filmed a bevy of pros tearing up Lowers, helmed by none other than San Clemente golden boy Griffin Colapinto.
“The first day of the Hurricane Genevieve swell saw a surprisingly uncrowded Lowers lineup with no more than 25 people at any point all morning long,” explained Cocozza in the caption. “Griffin Colapinto cruised down with his dad Mitch and the two scored an awesome session. Other pros like Victor Bernardo, Rickson Falcao, Jake Davis, and even legendary shaper Matt Biolos all were in the lineup getting great set waves.”
